Richard Hannay 1 - The 39 Steps

Richard Hannay has just returned to London when a frightened stranger arrives at his flat with a story of murder, spies, and a plot that could shake Britain on the eve of war. Days later, the stranger is dead and Hannay is framed. With police closing in and enemy agents on his trail, he flees north across moors, roads, and lonely countryside, relying on wit, nerve, and sheer speed to stay alive. John Buchan’s The 39 Steps is the classic man-on-the-run thriller: fast, tense, and endlessly influential—a landmark adventure novel that launched the Richard Hannay series and helped define the modern espionage chase story.
